John Hope Gateway Building, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

The John Hope Gateway is a threshold into Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden with unrivalled facilities that allow the public to discover the world of plants and botanical science.

Speirs + Major collaborated with Edward Cullinan Architects who have designed the John Hope Gateway – a sustainable, low-energy building consisting of exhibition spaces, education facilities, a media studio, shops, a restaurant and a new bio-diversity garden.
The lighting had to balance the need for the building to be both environmentally sustainable and commercially successful, while ensuring the health of rare plantlife. Exciting, flexible spaces were designed for exhibition and retail, which could also cater for evening functions such as weddings. We designed two distinct ambiences for the building – a white light look that creates a crisp, functional space by day and a dramatic evening look for celebrations.
