We are delighted to have been awarded first place in the Lights over Kruunuvuorenranta competition in Helsinki, Finland with our 'Luonnon Lyhdyt’ (Nature’s Lanterns) scheme, in collaboration with West 8. ’Into the Light’, a scheme by the Austrian group Bartenbach LichtLabor GmbH, was also awarded first place.

Kruunuvuorenranta lies on the site of a former oil port which is being redeveloped to become a new seaside district. Our entry aimed to create a natural and functional lighting scheme, attractive to those viewing the district from Helsinki which lies directly across from Kruunuvuorenranta.

The scheme, taking into consideration the enhanced winter hours of darkness, was influenced by the surrounding vegetation, existing materials in the area, human activity and the seasons. Focussing on nature, we proposed a sustainable and harmonious solution, with the ability to limit the amount of light due to the abundant and shimmering water reflections and highlight the importance attached to light in the everyday interactions between the residents and their community.
