We are pleased to post the following message on behalf of Elizabeth Speirs.

“This is a somewhat belated but very heartfelt thank you to everyone who sent messages to us and to our family following Jonathan’s death last June. Your kind comments were most appreciated. It was of great comfort to know that Jon was so well respected both as a colleague and as a friend. My daughters and I were astounded by the number of cards, letters and e-mails we received and by the number of people who came to his memorial service in Edinburgh. A total of £4,386 was donated to the Edinburgh Cancer Centre who will use it to buy a portable bladder scanner.

I’d also like to thank, in particular Mark Major, but everyone at Speirs + Major, our dear friends Paul Gregory and John Roake, and Jon’s brother David, for the tremendous efforts they have put into setting up the Jonathan Speirs Scholarship Fund. Jon worked so hard to promote lighting design as an integral part of architecture and it is good to know that his legacy will be to not only inspire young architects to develop their interest but also to assist them financially in this process. Further details about the fund can be found by e-mailing .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

We all miss Jon desperately but it helps to remember the great work in which he was involved and to know that his influence will continue to inspire young lighting designers going in the future.

Liz Speirs”
