Ten years ago today, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was opened to the public for the first time. An article in The National looks back at the construction, the architecture and the special part the lighting played in the overall design.

For the iconic exterior image, we drew on the fact the Islamic religious calendar is based on the lunar cycle, and looked to the moon as our source of inspiration. From bright white to blue, the mosque is illuminated in light that reflects the phases of the Moon as it waxes and wanes.
