I spoke at the ARC Conference last Thursday, along with Julie Greer, of Greer Pritchard, and Kay Hughes, Head of Design at the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). Together we discussed the approach to the public lighting programme at the Olympic Park. This included how the project was conceived, designed, managed and delivered to a world class standard and the challenges and opportunities involved.

Yesterday I gave a talk to the London Metropolitan University's second and third year Interior Design students, as part of their Creative Lighting module. They were interested in hearing about the lighting scheme for One New Change, which was recently completed in the City of London.

Keith attended a school assembly this morning in Hackney Downs as part of the Cultural Olympiad programme. Organised by the British Council, he spoke at the Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners designed Mossbourne Academy School to approximately 200 Year 8 children about what a lighting designer does and how we're helping with the Olympics.

On November 16, Keith Bradshaw will be speaking at Lighting Days in Copenhagen, an event organised by The Danish Lighting Centre. The theme of the conference is 'Light and Atmosphere'. Keith has tapped into this theme with his talk entitled 'To be (seen) or not to be (seen)':

"Should good light be imperceptible? Designing light into the physical and conceptual fabric of space is not easy and demands a deep comprehension of the core values of the project and how best to translate these into light. Developing the most appropriate manner in which to deliver the light requires a broad range of skills, experience and charm! Using examples from our design and delivery process, this presentation will give insights into our approach and attempts to realise projects based on simple, core ideas unique to each project."

Iain will be speaking at Professional Lighting Design Convention 2011 in Madrid, on the topic of "The Meaning of Light ". (Saturday 22nd October)

Arguing that light functions as language and that we need a new language to discuss light, I'll be roaming philosophical, theoretical and linguistic territory in search of ways to communicate with and about light.
I'm not often nervous about conference presentations, but this is pure intellectual exploration... pushing way out beyond projects, practice and technology. Anyone who is attending PLDC, please come along, help me out, and join the debate... I may regret saying this, but lighting journalists particularly welcome?

Keith Bradshaw will be speaking at the London leg of the Society for Environmental Graphic Designer's (SEGD) European Tour.

Held at Somerset House on October 13th, Keith will be describing and explaining the works of Speirs + Major to the graphic design community. SEGD's representatives Alex Wood (principal at Holmes Wood, London) and David Gibson (managing director of Two Twelve, New York) will also be speaking to raise awareness of the discipline of environmental graphical design, as well as encouraging dialogue between themselves and local design communities.

Keith hopes this coming together of Speirs + Major and SEGD, along with the numerous other design firms represented by the attendees, will continue to build mutual respect and collaboration between the two disciplines.

The Brazillian Association of Lighting Designers and Brazil's L+D Magazine are organising a two-day congress on LED lighting in architecture in Sao Paulo in August.

I'll be closing the conference with a paper referencing our experience and opinions on LEDs and LED luminaires, but will be getting away from the technical and doing some crystal-ball gazing. I'll be making some comparisons with the adoption of other game-changing technologies, from the internal combustion engine to the iPod.. and maybe even the good old Swann-Edison filament lamp...

We are constantly trying to push the boundaries of our collaborations and to create dialogues with as many disciplines as possible. Keith and I were therefore very excited to have the opportunity to give a presentation to Figtree and talk about how light can help brands communicate in a more effective and memorable way.

Mark Major has been invited to deliver a lecture as part of IES Mexico’s 13th International Lighting Journey, to be held from 1 – 3 June 2011 in Mexico City. The theme of the conference is ‘Beyond the lamp: Quality lighting for our environment’.

Mark will broaden this theme with his talk entitled ‘Light, People, Place’, which seeks to explore the changes artificial light has had on society, and will discuss moving away from ‘quantity’ in favour of ‘quality’ in order to create places for people after dark rather than simply filling space with light.
