People expect to have more control over their lighting: they want to be able to change the mood, dim the lighting and, in some cases, create colour and effects. People going to hotels or restaurants expect a well-thought out lighting scheme as a part of any environment associated with comfort and well-being."

Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts Moscow

Speirs + Major have been engaged to provide the lighting strategy for the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.

The aim of the new masterplan by Foster and Partners is to establish a thriving new cultural quarter. The lighting strategy is for the entire site comprising four distinct quarters and eight museum buildings.

Speirs + Major to develop new LED street light

Speirs + Major are working with lighting developers at Ruud Lighting to create a modular new system of LED street lights. The designs, based on nano LED technology, will result in a highly usable family of tools for urban lighting tasks. The system will be launched in 2011.

The John Hope Gateway is a threshold into Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden with unrivalled facilities that allow the public to discover the world of plants and botanical science.

Speirs + Major collaborated with Edward Cullinan Architects who have designed the John Hope Gateway – a sustainable, low-energy building consisting of exhibition spaces, education facilities, a media studio, shops, a restaurant and a new bio-diversity garden.

Burj Khalifa Dubai opens with spectacular celebration of light

On 4 January 2010 the world’s tallest building opened with a dramatic lighting ceremony in Dubai.

Back in 2009, Speirs + Major were invited by developers EMAAR to propose creative lighting solutions that would reinforce the brand image of this iconic and record-breaking tower. A proposal for the day-to-day illuminated appearance of the building was already in place, courtesy of Fisher Marantz Stone of New York. EMAAR, however, desired an additional celebratory layer of interest to create a statement after dark.

Shelter by Stephanie Imbeau

Stephanie Imbeau was chosen among thousands of applicants to win the competition to become the fourth artist to put a unique stamp on the big 4 logo installation outside the Channel 4 headquarters, in London. Speirs + Major worked were with the artists to design a new night-time image for each of the pieces. Part of the aim was to reinterpret the sculptures so they would be seen quite differently at night.
