Jonathan Speirs made honorary member of IALD

Jonathan Speirs has been made an honorary member of the International Association of Lighting Designers. The honour, announced during the association's evening awards ceremony held in Philadelphia, USA, was granted in recognition of Jonathan's outstanding commitment to the lighting design profession over several years.

The US-based association has previously conferred honours on several Speirs + Major projects. In 2008, Speirs + Major began a lucky hat-trick winning the association's top Radiance Award three years in a row for Barajas International Airport (2008), 3 More London (2009) and the Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi (2010).

Speirs + Major wins Scottish Design Award

Speirs + Major has won a Scottish Design Award for its lighting of the historical furnaces of Sands Bethworks in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Awards, held since 1998, celebrate the best achievements in Scottish architecture and graphic design.

Speirs + Major are in the running for a Scottish Design Award this year having been nominated for two recent projects, Edinburgh’s Usher Hall and the magnificent steel mills of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Awards, held every year since 1998, celebrate the best achievements in Scottish architecture and graphic design. The winners this year will be announced at an event held on the 19th of May at the Thistle Hotel Glasgow.

Infinity Bridge wins FX Design Award 2010, Best Lighting Design

Speirs + Major has won a 2010 FX Design Award for its illumination of Infinity Bridge in Stockton-on-Tees. The awards, organized by FX Magazine, have become an annual showcase for the best in international design.

The bridge, whose lit arches reflect in the water to form an eponymous infinity symbol, has already won its creators a number of prizes, including the Supreme Award for Structural Excellence in 2009, and the IALD Award of Excellence for lighting in 2010.

Speirs + Major shortlisted for Lighting Design Awards 2011

We’re pleased to announce that two schemes by Speirs + Major – Devonshire Square in London and Stockton’s Infinity Bridge – have been shortlisted for the 2011 Lighting Design Awards. The final winners will be announced at the event held on 10 March, 2011 at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London.

Jonathan Speirs receives RIAS Lifetime Achievement Award

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has presented Jonathan Speirs with its Lifetime Achievement Award - the highest accolade within Scottish architecture. The event took place at a ceremony in the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday 5 October, where Jonathan had been invited to receive a Fellowship of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.

Quite unexpectedly, it was also announced that Jonathan would receive the RIAS’s Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his long career during which he has promoted the highest standards of professional excellence in architecture and light and acted as an ambassador for Scottish design and architecture throughout the world.

Infinity Bridge shortlisted for Lighting Design at 2010 FX Awards

Infinity Bridge has been successfully shortlisted for Best Lighting Design at the FX Awards in November. Organized by FX Magazine, the awards celebrate the best in design from around the world. The ceremony takes place at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on 30 November 2010.

Since the Awards began twelve years ago, Speirs + Major have won on several occasions. A win for Infinity Bridge this year would earn the practice our 8th FX Design Award.

Speirs and Major Associates were successful again at the Scottish Design Awards. There were three nominees in the lighting category:

Speirs and Major Associates for lighting of RBGE John Hope Gateway, Edinburgh
Speirs and Major Associates for lighting of Infinity Bridge, Stockton on Tees
Speirs and Major Associates for lighting of the exterior of Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan Mosque, Abu Dhabi, UAE

And the award went to......Speirs and Major for the lighting of the Infinity Bridge, Stockton on Tees!!!

Grand Mosque makes it three in a row

Speirs + Major have won a third consecutive Radiance Award at the IALD International Lighting Design Awards, after winning the top prize for the lighting of the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

Speirs + Major win IALD Radiance Award for third consecutive year

For the third year running, Speirs + Major has been awarded the profession’s top award for lighting design. During an amazing night in Las Vegas, Speirs + Major achieved the seemingly impossible by winning the IALD Radiance Award for the third year running in an international field. The award was granted in recognition of the exterior lighting of the Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi.

For Speirs + Major it marks the latest in a succession of wins. In 2008 Speirs + Major first won the Radiance prize for their work on the Richard Rogers-designed Barajas International Airport. In 2009, we returned to win the prize again, this time in recognition of our work on the Foster and Partners-designed 3 More London.
