Lighting Stockton’s new bridge

The lighting of the Infinity footbridge is reviewed in this week’s Building Design.

Martin Spring writes: “The deck of the Infinity footbridge in Stockton-on-Tees is cloaked in a mysterious, sombre blue glow. Venture across it, though, the user is accompanied by a reassuring pool of white light moving at the same pace. This interactive kinetic effect is just one of several unique features the bridge has to offer.” Read the online article (subscription only).

The Architectural Record writes about the illumination of Sands Bethworks:

"No longer in use as a manufacturing facility, Bethlehem Steel Corporation’s Pennsylvania headquarters have become a monument to a bygone era of American industrial prominence. To honor this legacy, UK-based lighting design firm Speirs and Major Associates (SaMA) has crafted a lighting scheme rooted in ideas on manufacturing: LED displays simulate smoldering machinery in a spectrum of gleaming reds and blues. The end effect of this lighting design is at once both eerie and reverent, a duality that seems to capture the very spirit of the disused production complex.

Speirs + Major featured in the Herald

The Glasgow Herald has reported on our recent hat-trick of wins at the IALD Awards fest in Las Vegas. Speirs + Major won the Radiance award, regarded as the highest accolade in the industry, for the third year running. The prize was given for our work on the Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi. Two other designs, for the Infinity Bridge in Stockton-on-Tees and the Sands Resort in Bethlehem in the US, earned Excellence and Merit prizes.
