Norwich Cathedral wins IALD Award of Excellence

We are delighted to announce that our lighting scheme for the interior of Norwich Cathedral won a coveted ‘Award of Excellence’ at the 37th IALD Awards in a unique online ceremony last night.

Our sincere thanks to the Dean and Chapter of Norwich Cathedral for entrusting us with the project, and to all the members of the project team!

‘Saving the Night’ webinar

Mark will be participating in a webinar, ‘Saving the Night’ as part of the London Festival of Architecture 2020. The webinar will focus on issues around public lighting in London with a particular emphasis on the river. It asks how we might redress the problems of over-lighting, light pollution and ecological impacts created by artificial light while improving the experience of the public realm after dark and supporting the night-time economy.

An expert panel, chaired by design guru Stephen Bayley and comprising speakers Alex Lifschutz (Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands), Mark Major (Speirs + Major), Mathew Frith (London Wildlife Trust) and Don Slater (London School of Economics), will participate in a 45-minute online event consisting of a series of short presentations followed by Q&A.

With a shared interest in the edges of architecture, technology and brand experiences Speirs + Major and FreeState have collaborated on several unique projects. In a time when our experience of sharing space and congregating has extra poignancy designing a 24hr experience and enlivening the dusk economy are particularly interesting to dream of and discuss.
