On 21st March 2012, Speirs + Major were honoured to be awarded the ‘Design Practice of the Decade’ at the 10th Annual Lighting Design Awards in London. Receiving this award has given us cause to reflect on the past 10 years; on what we have achieved and how we are evolving:

Our Work
We have worked for visionary clients and collaborated with renowned architects, designers and artists on a wide range of projects - from city masterplans to public squares - from airports to cathedrals. We have approached each project on an individual basis delivering more than was expected and creating great experiences for people.

Our Awards
If good work can be judged on industry awards then we have achieved a great deal in the last 10 years. Our tally of 66 awards and commendations includes 3 International Association of Lighting Designer’s ‘Radiance Awards’. We are the only firm that has ever achieved this distinction. We have also been part of 5 Stirling Prize winning teams.

Our International Reach
The past decade has seen us working in over 30 countries. We have endeavoured to bring the very best of British Design - creativity and imagination mixed with rigour and pragmatism - to all of our projects overseas.

Our Professional Profile
We have taken an active role in promoting the lighting profession and raising awareness of good lighting. Initiatives have included our educational project: ‘Made of Light - The Art of Light and Architecture’. This outreach project attracted the attention of tens of thousands of professionals and members of the public.

Our Corporate Responsibility
We have taken our wider responsibilities seriously, delivering the highest standards of lighting design alongside a strong emphasis on sustainability. We have worked closely with charitable organisations including Maggie’s Centres, The National Police Memorial Trust and The Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Our Education
We have supported architectural and lighting education both externally and through our internal CPD programme. The past decade has seen us give lectures across the world to professionals, students and members of the public alike and make creative contributions to many festivals and events.

Whilst we are pleased to be able to celebrate the achievements of the last 10 years our approach to the next decade is what counts. We wish to build upon our legacy to help meet the social, economic and environmental challenges that face society today. This will be through continuing to provide a highly creative design service that pays real attention to detail at every scale: from city planning and strategic design to public realm and building projects; from brand identity to product design.
