The Queen Street Bridge in Toronto, designed by Wilkinson Eyre, replaces an existing pedestrian bridge between two adjacent retail spaces. The geometry of the design responds to the contrasting architectural language of the two buildings it links, forming a metaphorical handshake above the road.

We integrated lighting into the deck to create a simple, apparently effortless reveal of the unique, twisting geometry of the bridge. The light envelops pedestrians in a warm glow from the arch shaped entrance to the heritage Hudson’s Bay building, enhancing the torque and twist of the bridges surfaces and joints lines.

The exterior overhanging the sidewalk is a backlit soffit, creating a positive experience for pedestrians passing under the bridge at street level.
