Speirs + Major were invited to light the lobby and atrium of this
award-winning office development on the banks of the River
Thames.
The brief was to produce a simple, elegant solution, which would
eliminate the need for high-level fixtures or clutter on the ground
plane.
Speirs + Major worked in close conjunction with Foster + Partners
and lighting manufacturer Fagerhult to produce a suspended
luminaire that would light both floor and ceiling simultaneously. The
fitting is designed around the two main light sources for up- and
downlighting.
The pendant solution provides general lighting to the 10-storey
atrium space in an unobtrusive fashion. It was important not to
restrict any views of the ceiling with glare from downlights, so the
pendants include an uplighting element to illuminate the ceiling
structure after dark. A special louvre was designed to ensure that
there was no glare when looking down into the atrium from the
high level offices and balconies.
A prototype was made and reviewed in the Fagerhult factory in
Sweden and then mocked up on site in the atrium to ensure it
worked as required. The mounting bracket was designed by the
architect to allow a suspension over 9 storeys (20m).
